Does General Relativity Matter for Artificial Gravity?¶
1. The Short Answer¶
For engineering an O'Neill cylinder, general relativity is completely irrelevant. The corrections it would introduce are so absurdly small they're unmeasurable. Classical mechanics (\(F = ma\), centripetal acceleration) is all you need.
But — the conceptual connection between gravity and acceleration is one of the most important ideas in all of physics, and it's directly relevant to why artificial gravity works so perfectly. So it's worth understanding, even if it doesn't change any numbers.
2. Einstein's Equivalence Principle¶
The Thought Experiment¶
Standing on Earth, you feel the floor push up on your feet. You call this "gravity."
Now imagine you're in a sealed box in deep space — no planets, no stars nearby. The box is accelerating upward at \(9.81 \; \text{m/s}^2\). The floor pushes up on your feet with force \(mg\). You drop a ball and it "falls." You stand on a scale and it reads your Earth weight.
Einstein's radical claim: these two scenarios are physically indistinguishable. No experiment you can perform inside the box — no measurement of any kind — can tell you whether you're in a gravitational field or in an accelerating reference frame.
This is the equivalence principle, and it's the foundation of general relativity.
What "Locally" Means¶
The equivalence holds in a small enough region of space. Over larger distances, real gravity varies (it's stronger closer to the massive object), while uniform acceleration doesn't. This distinction shows up as tidal forces — but for a human-sized region, it's negligible in both cases.
3. How This Connects to the Spinning Cylinder¶
The cylinder provides centripetal acceleration \(a = \omega^2 r\) directed inward. You experience this as a force pressing you into the floor.
The equivalence principle says: this acceleration is gravity, in every physically meaningful sense, at least locally.
So when we set:
and say "this feels like Earth gravity" — we're not making a rough approximation or a useful analogy. According to Einstein, it genuinely is equivalent to gravity in every way that matters for local physics. Your bones respond to it. Your blood pools under it. Your vestibular system registers it. Plants grow away from it. Pendulums swing in it. All physical processes behave as they would in a real gravitational field of the same strength.
Classical mechanics gets the right engineering answer: \(F = ma\), set \(a = g\), build accordingly. The equivalence principle tells you why the result is so perfect — it's not a simulation of gravity, it's an equivalent form of it.
4. Where GR Corrections Would Appear (and Why They're Negligible)¶
General relativity introduces corrections in two regimes. The cylinder hits neither.
4.1 Strong Gravitational Fields¶
GR corrections scale with the dimensionless ratio:
where \(M\) is the mass creating the gravitational field, \(r\) is the distance, \(G\) is Newton's gravitational constant, and \(c\) is the speed of light.

For the O'Neill cylinder, \(M \approx 10^9 \; \text{kg}\), \(r \approx 3200 \; \text{m}\):
That's nineteen orders of magnitude below measurability. The cylinder's own mass curves spacetime by an amount so small that no instrument ever built could detect it.
4.2 Speeds Near Light¶

5. The One Real Difference: Tidal Effects¶
There is a subtle difference between true gravitational fields and the cylinder's artificial gravity, and GR reveals it.
Real Gravity (from a massive body)¶
Gravitational acceleration follows an inverse-square law:
The force is stronger closer to the mass, weaker farther away. This gradient creates tidal forces — a stretching effect. (This is what causes ocean tides on Earth, and what would spaghettify you near a black hole.)
Cylinder "Gravity"¶
The effective acceleration varies linearly with radius:
It's zero at the center and increases outward. The gradient is constant (\(\omega^2\)), not inverse-square.
Can You Tell the Difference?¶
In principle, yes. A sufficiently sensitive experiment could measure how the force changes with position and find it doesn't follow an inverse-square pattern. The equivalence principle only guarantees indistinguishability locally — in a small enough region.
In practice? For a human standing on the floor, the tidal difference across your \(\sim 2 \; \text{m}\) height is negligible in both cases:

The cylinder actually has a larger gradient than Earth, but it's still far below human perception.
6. Q&A¶
Q: Does general relativity change any of the engineering for the cylinder?¶
No. Not by any measurable amount. Classical \(F = ma\) with \(a = \omega^2 r\) gives you the exact same answer as a full GR treatment, to more decimal places than you could ever measure. You would use GR for a habitat orbiting near a neutron star or black hole. For an O'Neill cylinder in normal space, it's irrelevant.
Q: Then why bring up GR at all?¶
Because the equivalence principle explains why artificial gravity is so perfect. It's not that the cylinder tricks your body into thinking there's gravity. It's that, according to the deepest theory of gravity we have, acceleration and gravity are the same thing locally. The cylinder doesn't simulate gravity — it produces a condition that is physically equivalent to it.
Q: How does gravity "bending spacetime" relate to what's happening in the cylinder?¶
On Earth, mass curves spacetime, and objects follow the straightest possible paths (geodesics) through that curved geometry. What we call "gravity pulling you down" is actually you trying to follow a geodesic while the floor prevents you from doing so. The floor's push is what you feel — not the curvature itself.
In the cylinder, there's no significant spacetime curvature (the mass is too small). But you're in a non-inertial (rotating) reference frame, which in GR is described by a different metric — a mathematical description of how space and time are measured by a rotating observer. The effect on local physics is equivalent.
The punchline: in both cases, what you feel is the floor pushing on you, and the equivalence principle says those two pushes are physically indistinguishable.
Q: If I'm floating at the center of the cylinder, do I feel anything?¶
No. At the center (\(r = 0\)), the effective acceleration is \(\omega^2 \times 0 = 0\). You're weightless. As you move outward from the center, "gravity" increases linearly until you reach the rim where it equals \(g\) (if designed correctly). This is completely unlike Earth, where gravity barely changes across human-scale distances.
Q: Is the artificial gravity truly identical to Earth gravity, or just a very good approximation?¶
Locally — within a small region — the equivalence principle says it's identical. No experiment can tell the difference. Globally — across the full cylinder — there are differences: the gravity gradient is linear (not inverse-square), Coriolis effects exist (which Earth also has, but much weaker), and the geometry is obviously cylindrical. For everyday human experience on the floor of the habitat, these differences are below the threshold of perception.
